Common Questions:

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

BJJ is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, and  heavier opponent. This is done by using technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokes (chokes will not be taught to kids until they graduate into the teen program or when it is confirmed they are ready to learn) to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations. Today BJJ is the foundation Martial Art used for special forces, military, police and mixed martial arts.

How will the class be structured for our Kids?

We will keep a fun framework in our kids program. Our teaching methodology uses the encouragement push method of learning instead of the negative, pull method of learning. Classes will consist of fun warm up drills (that are similar to gymnast warm up drills). These drills actually teach and build the framework for Jiu Jitsu. The next section of class will consist of fun instruction by the use of Jiu Jitsu games, where your kids learn the move of the week in a fun collaborative way with their training partner (depending on the class dynamics this is a great opportunity for parents to get involved as training partners at home as well). Once your kids start building confidence in their technique and when to use their self defense techniques, we will work with verbal and physical bully defense tactics. We will also spend the last few minutes of class focusing on a character trait and example in how they can show that character trait with their friend and family.  Classes will last 1 hour.

What is the cost  and how can I register and pay?
You can either pay directly online or via the welcome email by your Triib account. When you log in to your account, you can update your billing information. ACH is the preferred payment method.

Are there Discounts?

We do offer sibling discounts. Every child after the 1st will receive a $15 discount for tuition each month and a $25 discount for the one time registration fee.

Are there any contracts?

We offer reduced 1 year offers with extra benefits. We also offer recurring monthly payments that begin once you start your classes. While there are no contracts, we do require a written notice 30 days in advance should you wish to cancel. The recurring payment is easily set up through via your ROJ triib account. This will allow you to securely put in your information for the monthly recurring payment.

What is the belt system for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
For adults there are 6 belts; White, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. For children the belt system can vary by age depending on the school or association, but generally the ranks are; White, Gray, Yellow, Orange, and Green. For both adults and children each rank has up to 4 stripes (degrees) before a promotion to the next belt level.

Is there a belt rank test and if so, do you charge testing fees?
No, there is no belt rank test; however, attendance is tracked to make sure students are not creating learning gaps.

How do I receive promotion and how often?
Students promotions are based upon the head coach’s assessment of their skills. This includes but is not limited to; consistency of training, ability to retain techniques learned, ability to apply techniques during live sparring, etc. The ranking process in BJJ can be very subjective. Students are not promoted to a given belt level until they possess the skills that someone of that level should possess. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not the right art for you if you are looking to receive a new promotion every few months.
